MARTIN, Tenn. – Coming off a season where the University of Tennessee at Martin spent seven weeks in the national top-10 standings, the Skyhawks were voted at No. 10 in the National Collegiate Equestrian Association preseason rankings today.
Auburn comes in at No. 1 and is followed by No. 2 Texas A&M, No. 3 Georgia, No. 4 Oklahoma State, No. 5 SMU, No. 6 Baylor, No. 7 South Carolina, No. 8 TCU, No. 9 Fresno State and No. 10 UT Martin.
The Skyhawks return 26 student-athletes and welcome 18 newcomers to the fold in 2019-20, which marks the 15th season at the helm for head coach Meghan Cunningham Corvin. UT Martin has participated in the NCEA Championships in 11 of the 13 years since the team's transition to varsity status and has produced a victory in the NCEA Event Championships in each of the past two seasons.
A trio of returning Skyhawks boast All-American status in their illustrious careers in Noel Meadows (2019 reining first team, 2018 reining honorable mention), Abbie Hopkins (2018 equitation over fences second team) and Randi LaChance (2017 equitation on the flat honorable mention).
Last season, Meadows became the first-ever UT Martin recipient to claim All-American first team status and was also just the second Skyhawk to earn an All-American title across multiple seasons. She was named conference Reining Rider of the Year and was joined on the all-conference team by returners Hopkins (equitation on the flat), Kelby Kane (Equitation on the Flat Freshman of the Year) and Hannah McDonald (reining).
UT Martin officially begins the 2019-20 campaign next week with a pair of action-packed home events, as the Skyhawks will host No. 1 Auburn (Sept. 19) and No. 4 Oklahoma State (Sept. 20) at the Ned McWherter Agricultural Pavilion.
