MURRAY, Ky. – It was a historical day at Miller Memorial Golf Course today as University of Tennessee at Martin senior Jack Story shattered the Murray State Invitational scoring record en route to a commanding victory to open the 2019-20 season.
Entering today's final round with a one-shot advantage, Story ran away with medalist honors – carding a career-low 63 to win the tournament by 11 strokes. The Dickson, Tenn. native wrapped up the best tournament of his career with an overall score of 195 (-18), posting all three of his tournament-high eagles today to go along with 16 birdies. He also topped the 95-man tournament field in par-4 scoring (3.76, -8) and par-5 scoring (4.00, -9).
Story's first collegiate victory came after he set the scoring record in the 18-year history of the event, previously held by former Tennessee Tech standout and current PGA Tour member Scott Stallings in 2005 (68-63-66; 197).
"Jack's medalist performance is much deserving," UT Martin head coach Jerry Carpenter said. "He had an off year last season and he worked so hard this summer to get in shape for a big senior year. For him to start on a high note like this, it just shows what hard work and determination can do when you put in the time and effort."
It wasn't just Story who made easy work of the golf course today as the Skyhawks were seven shots better than any of the other 16 teams in the field in Round 3. UT Martin pieced together a 273 (-11) to jump one spot in the standings, finishing second with a cumulative score of 834 (-18) behind host Murray State (830, -22). The Skyhawks' 273 was the program's best single-round performance since at least 2008.
"Every one of our guys played well today despite a strong wind that hit us around 11 o'clock," Carpenter said. "Our team chemistry is building and good things are ahead for this group. We are looking forward to keeping the momentum going – I'm so proud of our performance today and throughout the tournament."
Joining Story on the Murray State Invitational all-tournament squad was redshirt senior Ross Redmont, who placed fourth with an overall tally of 207 (-6). The Memphis, Tenn. native cashed in his sixth career top-five tournament finish after shooting a 69 this morning.
Mason Chandler provided UT Martin with its third top-10 representative as the redshirt junior out of Kenton, Tenn. easily notched the best finish of his collegiate career. He tallied a 72 during Round 3 to wrap up his tournament with an overall score of 210 (-3) while competing as an individual.
The junior duo of Nick Wolf (70) and Tate Chumley (71) came away with good rounds today to finish up the scoring in the Skyhawk lineup. Bryson Morrell also represented UT Martin, concluding Round 3 with a 76.
For the tournament, Chumley placed 20th with a 216 (+3) behind a team-best 36 pars while Morrell (222, +9) and Wolf (223, +10) were separated by just one stroke.
Freshmen Jacob Uehlein and Luke Smith each carded identical 73's today as individuals. Uehlein wrapped up his tournament with a 218 (+5) while Smith finished with a 225 (+12).
The Skyhawks have a quick turnaround before their next tournament, which will be the Raising Canes Intercollegiate on Sept. 14-15. The event is hosted by Eastern Kentucky University and will take place at Arlington Golf Course in Richmond, Ky.
