MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin football team gave its faithful Skyhawk fans a first look at the 2019 squad with the team's first scrimmage of preseason camp on Saturday night under the lights of Hardy Graham Stadium.
With nearly 100 fans in the stands enjoying a balmy August evening, the Skyhawks held their ninth practice of preseason camp featuring individual work before transitioning into a full speed intrasquad scrimmage. With the team spilt into offense, defense and special teams, the Skyhawks saw both the first and second team units go head-to-head while the third and fourth team units garnered valuable reps.
"It was good competition with neither team really dominating," UT Martin head coach Jason Simpson said. "I thought the offense did some good things early and the defense did some good things late but I was disappointed in our kicking game. I told the guys that we didn't expect perfection – even though we strive for it – but I liked the sound of the run game and I thought we went up and made some plays. We have a lot in after nine days on both sides of the ball. Now we will go back and see where we are from a personnel standpoint and this week we will continue to focus on us."
UT Martin will take off Sunday before returning to the gridiron for a full week of practice beginning on Monday, Aug. 12. Following five consecutive practices, the Skyhawks will conduct another scrimmage on Saturday, Aug. 17.
