MARTIN, Tenn. – A lengthy season-opening homestand and the inaugural season in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference highlights the 2019-20 University of Tennessee at Martin equestrian schedule, which was unveiled today.
It was announced this summer that the former United Equestrian Conference members will join the ECAC for the 2019-20 season. The Skyhawks will take part in 11 regular season competitions before traveling to Dover, Del. for the inaugural ECAC Championship tournament, which will take place on March 26-28.
The 2019-20 season officially kicks off with four consecutive home competitions, starting with a highly anticipated matchup against defending national champion Auburn on Sept. 19. UT Martin will follow that with another challenging competition against perennial national contender Oklahoma State on Sept. 20.
The Skyhawks then compete in their first two ECAC competitions when they square off against Delaware State (Oct. 10) and South Dakota State (Oct. 11) at the Ned McWherter Agricultural Pavilion. A quick trip to national heavyweight South Carolina on Nov. 15 rounds out the fall schedule for UT Martin.
The spring portion of the schedule kicks off with a trip to The Golden State. The Skyhawks will battle UC Davis on Feb. 7 in Fresno, Calif. before UT Martin takes on ECAC rival Fresno State on Feb. 8.
A little under two weeks later, the final two home matches of the season take place. The Skyhawks begin with an ECAC showdown against SMU on Feb. 20 and will follow with their first-ever matchup against SUNY New Paltz on Feb. 21.
UT Martin's regular season concludes with two competitions in one day as the Skyhawks compete against Delaware State and Georgia on Feb. 29 in Athens, Ga. UT Martin will look to defeat Georgia for the second consecutive year, as the Skyhawks knocked off the Bulldogs last January before Georgia finished as national champions in the equitation over fences, horsemanship and reining events.
Following the aforementioned ECAC Championship hosted by Delaware State, UT Martin will look to advance to the 2020 NCEA Championships, which will once again be held in Waco, Texas. This year's event takes place on Wednesday, April 15 through Saturday, April 18.
The Skyhawks return first team All-American Noel Meadows (reining) and four all-conference honorees (Meadows, Abbie Hopkins, Kelby Kane, Hannah McDonald) from last season's squad that spent seven weeks in the national top-10 standings. UT Martin tallied a postseason event victory at the NCEA Championships for the second straight year in 2018-19 under head coach Meghan Cunningham Corvin.
