MARTIN, Tenn. – Eric Rustin, a 7-1, 185-pound incoming freshman out of Tennessee Preparatory Academy in Memphis, has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball program.
"We are extremely excited to have Eric join our program," Skyhawk head coach Anthony Stewart said. "He has a 7-foot-9 wingspan and he immediately effects the game defensively with his ability to block and alter shots. He has so much natural talent and his potential on the offensive side is limitless as well – his strength and ability to put on weight will be key factors in his development."
A Richmond, Va. native, Rustin averaged a double-double (13 points, 10.3 rebounds) and swatted away 3.7 blocks per outing while playing for coaches Harold Rayford, Jr. and Terry Hicks at the prestigious Tennessee Prep program that produced several Division I signees.
Consistently going up against stiff competition on a nightly basis, Rustin rose to the challenge with several big outings – including 11 points, 17 rebounds, eight blocks and two steals against Northwest Mississippi Community College on Nov. 15, 2018. He also collected eight points, 12 rebounds and six blocks in a victory over highly regarded prep school Aspire Academy on Dec. 3 in addition to 15 points in a win against DME Sports Academy on Jan. 19.
Rustin's strong play piqued the interest of several elite recruiting services. He was lauded by National Prep Review for his strong upside and also earned high marks as one of the top post prospects in the state of Virginia from PrepHoops.com.
Rustin graduated from Huguenot High School before moving to the Volunteer State. Playing under head coach Ksaan Brown, he helped lead the Falcons to their first-ever regional championship as a senior. One of his best games his senior season came in a showdown against 6-10, 370-pound Christian Chappell of Prince George High School, where Rustin tallied 14 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks against the all-conference honoree.
Rustin joins Isaac Aguiar (Covenant College Prep/North Arlington, NJ), Ja'Darius Harris (Peabody HS/Trenton, Tenn.), Jalen Riley (Antelope Valley College/Los Angeles, Calif.), Eman Sertovic (Bella Vista Prep/Bihac, Bosnia & Herzegovina), Miles Thomas (Walters State CC/ Chattanooga, Tenn.) and Steve Wooten (Mineral Area College/Madison, Wis.) as UT Martin newcomers for next season.
