BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – The Ohio Valley Conference announced its 2019 All-OVC baseball selections as the University of Tennessee at Martin senior outfielder Jordan Stoner and sophomore closer Nick Wohlbold both earned a spot on the league's second team.
For the second straight season, Stoner has been named to an All-OVC team. He is the first Skyhawk to take home back-to-back All-OVC accolades in program history and just the second player in UT Martin history to win two All-OVC selections (joining second teamer Jordan Owen in 2010 and 2012). Wohlbold is the third Skyhawk pitcher to ever earn an All-OVC nod and first since Coty Green was named to the second team in 2010.
Hailing from Puyallup, Wash., Stoner ranked in the top-10 in the OVC in three categories while having started in all 53 games for UT Martin. He led the Skyhawks in batting average (.333), at-bats (207), hits (69), doubles (17), total bases (97), times hit by pitch (17), on base percentage (.410) and slugging percentage (.469). He ranked in the top-10 in the OVC in times hit by pitch (second), doubles (fourth) and hits (ninth).
Stoner collected 23 multi-hit outings and scored 33 runs to go along with 29 RBI's in 2019. He also strung together a team-best 18-game on-base streak, which lasted from March 31 through May 4. Defensively, he posted a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage in 129 total chances while mainly patrolling centerfield.
Although he only played at UT Martin for two seasons, Stoner ranks in the school's top-10 in times hit by pitch (33, first), doubles (34, sixth) and triples (five, 10th).
A hard-throwing righty out of Columbia, Mo., Wohlbold has made a splash in his first full season out of the Skyhawk bullpen. He led the OVC in saves (12) as he tossed 35 innings and rung up 44 opposing batters along the way. His dozen saves finished out the regular season as the 14th-most among all Division I pitchers and were not only a UT Martin single-season record but were three more than the previous career record holder.
Wohlbold recorded 18 scoreless outings out of his 23 appearances for the Skyhawks, pitching to a 3.09 ERA. He fanned a season-high seven batters a 2.1-inning appearance at Eastern Kentucky on March 24 and recorded 12 multi-strikeout outings on the year. He did not allow an extra-base hit until April 21 and conceded just six extra-base hits for the duration of the spring. He also took part in three of the team's five shutouts in 2019.
UT Martin opens the 2019 OVC Championship tournament this evening as the Skyhawks take on No. 7 seed Eastern Illinois at 6 p.m. This year's tournament is being held at Rent One Park in Marion, Ill.
