
SKYHAWK TENNIS FALLS 6-1 TO UNDEFEATED OVC RIVAL AUSTIN PEAY

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin tennis squad ran into one of the hottest teams in the country today as the Skyhawks fell 6-1 to Ohio Valley Conference foe Austin Peay.

UT Martin (3-10, 1-4 OVC) posted one victory in doubles and a win in singles today, including a notable triumph by Asel Jumamukhambetova at No. 1 singles. The senior from Atyrau, Kazakhstan remained perfect against OVC opposition, improving to 5-0 with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Claudia Yanes Garcia. That win snapped a perfect 23-0 mark for Austin Peay during OVC singles action in 2019.

In doubles, Amelia Campbell and Andrea Plantada notched a 6-4 triumph at No. 3. After Mizuki Sakurai and Daphne Pratt fell by a 6-0 margin at No. 2, the Governors (16-0, 4-0 OVC) picked up the first point of the match with a narrow 7-5 win at No. 1 against Jumamukhambetova and Jemima Potter.

Sakurai nearly came away with a win at No. 5 singles but fell in a close 7-6, 7-6 decision. Campbell represented the Skyhawks at No. 4, falling 6-3, 6-2 while Potter battled at No. 2 but was defeated by a 6-3, 6-1 margin. Jule Streif (lost 6-1, 6-2) and Plantada (lost 6-1, 6-1) were slotted at No. 6 and No. 3, respectively, for UT Martin.

The Skyhawks wrap up a three-game road trip on Friday, April 12 when they head to Jacksonville State. The OVC match is set to begin at noon.
