JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – The University of Tennessee at Martin tennis squad gave a valiant effort this afternoon but several tight singles results did not go the Skyhawks' way in a 6-1 loss at Jacksonville State.
          Â
UT Martin (3-11, 1-5 Ohio Valley Conference) scored a doubles win at No. 3 thanks to a 6-3 victory from Andrea Plantada and Amelia Campbell. However, the Gamecocks (10-3, 4-1 OVC) were awarded the opening point as they tallied a 6-3 win over Mizuki Sakurai and Daphne Pratt at No. 2 and a 6-0 win over Asel Jumamukhambetova and Jemima Potter at No. 1.
          Â
Potter dialed up a singles victory at No. 2, defeating her counterpart by a 7-6, 7-5 margin. The Skyhawks could taste victory in three other singles matchups but unfortunately Jacksonville State came out on top in each result. At No. 1, Jumamukhambetova fell 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 while Campbell (6-4, 4-6, 6-2 at No. 4) and Sakurai (6-1, 3-6, 6-0 at No. 6) also experienced gut-wrenching setbacks.

Additionally, Pratt was slotted at No. 3 and nearly forced yet another tiebreaker but was defeated 6-3, 7-6. Plantada represented UT Martin at No. 5 but fell by a 6-2, 7-5 margin.
          Â
The Skyhawks wrap up the regular season next weekend when they play host to OVC rivals Eastern Illinois (Friday, April 19) and SIUE (Saturday, April 20). Both matches will begin at 2 p.m. as the latter match will serve as Senior Day for Olha Burak, Jumamukhambetova, Plantada and Potter.
