MARTIN, Tenn. – The underclassmen stepped up for the University of Tennessee at Martin as the Skyhawks displayed a convincing 5-2 triumph over Ohio Valley Conference foe SIUE this afternoon.

UT Martin improves to 4-11 overall with a 2-5 league mark, keeping its OVC Tournament hopes alive with the victory.Â

Following a pregame Senior Day ceremony that honored UT Martin's Olha Burak, Asel Jumamukhambetova, Andrea Plantada and Jemima Potter, the Skyhawks grabbed the early momentum with a pair of doubles wins. Amelia Campbell and Plantada teamed up for a 6-1 win at No. 3 before a 6-3 victory by Jumamukhambetova/Potter at No. 1 provided UT Martin with a 1-0 edge going into singles.

Mizuki Sakurai accounted for the Skyhawks' first victory in singles, defeating her Cougar counterpart by a 6-3, 6-4 margin at No. 6. Plantada followed with a 7-6 (4), 6-3 triumph at No. 5 before Daphne Pratt clinched the team win with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 3. Campbell tacked on another singles win at No. 4 with a come-from-behind 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory.

An OVC Tournament spot is on the line tomorrow as UT Martin faces Eastern Illinois to determine the No. 6 seed in the upcoming field. The match will begin at 3 p.m. at the Skyhawk Tennis Complex.
