MARTIN, Tenn. – A three-match Ohio Valley Conference road trip begins this weekend for the University of Tennessee at Martin tennis team, as the Skyhawks pay afternoon visits to OVC co-preseason favorites Murray State on Friday, April 5 and Austin Peay on Saturday, April 6.
UT Martin is coming off its first OVC victory of the season – a convincing 6-1 home triumph over Tennessee State on Monday. In that match, the Skyhawks claimed wins in each of the first seven decisions of the day (first two doubles matches, five consecutive singles matches).
A common theme for UT Martin so far in OVC play has been tiebreaking matchups in singles action. Fourteen of the Skyhawks' 18 singles matches have gone into a third set, with UT Martin going an even 7-7 in those scenarios.
Asel Jumamukhambetova is a perfect 3-0 at No. 1 in OVC play so far in 2019 while Andrea Plantada (No. 4) and Amelia Campbell (No. 5) also boast a pair of victories. In OVC doubles, the Skyhawks' No. 1 team of Jumamukhambetova/Jemima Potter own a 2-1 mark while Campbell and Plantada are undefeated at No. 3.
UT Martin is 22-20 all-time against Murray State, having won two out of the last three decisions against the Racers. Potter leads all active Skyhawks with four career victories against Murray State, having won a pair of singles and a pair of doubles matchups. Plantada (one singles, two doubles) and Jumamukhambetova (two singles, one doubles) also claim three career wins while Campbell went a perfect 2-0 in her only career matchup against the Racers last spring.
The Skyhawks are 27-6 all-time against Austin Peay but lost both outings against the Governors last season. That included a 5-2 home setback during the regular season and a 4-1 loss in the OVC Tournament quarterfinals. Jumamukhambetova boasts five career victories against the Governors, three of which have occurred in doubles action. Potter and Plantada each have three doubles wins to their credit amongst their four career victories against Austin Peay while Campbell was undefeated in two doubles decisions against the Governors in 2018.
Murray State (8-7, 2-1 OVC) accounts for three of the league's top-10 returning players from a year ago in Claire Chang (No. 2), Stasya Sharapova (No. 9) and Aarja Chakraborty (No. 10). Chang, who was named OVC Player of the Week on March 20, has played in the No. 1 slot in singles for the duration of the season. In addition, Sara Loncarevic is responsible for a team-best 19-4 singles record and a team-best 18-5 mark (3-0 OVC) in doubles alongside Amina Hadzic.
Austin Peay enters the weekend with a 14-0 record, including a 2-0 OVC mark. The Governors lay claim to three of the conference's top-four returning players, including three-time OVC Player of the Year Lidia Yanes Garcia (team-best 21-4 record in singles). Fabiene Schmidt (2018 OVC Freshman of the Year) and Tatiana Lopez (team-best 14-3 doubles record) also made the preseason top returners list while Claudia Yanes Garcia has been named OVC Player of the Week on Feb. 13 and March 27.
