MEMPHIS, Tenn. – While wind gusts provided less than ideal conditions, the University of Tennessee at Martin track and field squads stood the test with fast times at Memphis Tiger Invitational over the weekend.
In the team's final meet prior to the Ohio Valley Conference Track Championships in two weeks, UT Martin made the quick trip to the Memphis Tigers Invitational with events on Friday and Saturday.
On Friday night, the Skyhawks began their highlight performances in the men's 1500m as junior Oisin O'Gailin won the event with a time of 3:52.25 to pace a field of 37 competitors. Meanwhile, sophomores Alex Schell and Lenny Bauman smashed their previous PRs with back-to-back finishes at 4:06.5 and 4:07.29, respectively. Sophomore Chance Rone also posted a season-best finish at 4:12.26.
Wrapping up Friday's events was the 200m dash in which junior Jasmyn Pilcher paced the Skyhawks at 26.53 seconds on the women's side. On the men's side, freshman Brady Fry posted a top-10 finish in the 200m with a time of 22.28 – outmatching all other OVC competitors in the event. Freshman Steve Jackson also competed in the event, establishing a new season-best.
The squad returned for Day Two of the Memphis Tiger Invitational with freshman Jalynn Landversicht posting a top-five mark at 1.65m. Then in the women's 100m dash, junior Ilishia Tarver ran a PR with a time of 12.39 while Bryana Maclin recorded a PR of her own in the women's 100m hurdles at 15.63. Sticking with the sprint events, Fry returned to action on Saturday with a runner-up finish in the men's 110m hurdles with a new PR of 14.39 to best his previous school record set a week ago by three-tenths of a second.
Transitioning into the 800m events, freshman Breanna Roy stepped down in distance to win her heat with a time of 2:23.79. On the men's side, junior Leonel Perez finished fifth overall with a time of 1:54.9 while O'Gailin joined in the action with a sixth-place finish at 1:54.98. Meanwhile, the Skyhawk trio of Tim Dye, Joey Palumbo and Brent Borden finish first, second and third – respectively – in their heat.
Rounding out the day was freshman Anndrea Chester with a top-10 finish in the women's 400m hurdles with a time of 1:08.07. Then in the men's 4x400m relay, the Skyhawks finished second in their heat.
"With this being the last race before the OVC Championships at SEMO, the squad is getting into their final form as far as physical fitness," UT Martin head coach Peter Dalton said. "It is time to round up the school year and get ready for the season's focus of the OVC's in two weeks."
UT Martin will take a break for finals before competing at the OVC Outdoor Track Championships hosted by Southeast Missouri on Thursday, May 9 through Saturday, May 11.
