SKYHAWKS HEAD TO MUSCLE SHOALS IN SEARCH OF 2019 OVC GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP

MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin will go for its second team championship and fourth individual medalist in the last five years when the Skyhawks take part in the 2019 Ohio Valley Conference Golf Championships, held in Muscle Shoals, Ala. on April 21-23.
For the sixth year in a row, the tournament will be held at the Fighting Joe course at The Shoals on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. The par-72 course opened in 2004 and will be playing at 7,258 yards. UT Martin won the event with a score of 879 (+15) for its first OVC title in program history in 2016 while the Skyhawks recently produced three consecutive individual winners (Brendon Caballero in 2015, Hunter Richardson in 2016 and 2017) as well.
The tournament's practice round is set for Saturday, April 20 as UT Martin will have its first opportunity to test out the course at 1:10 p.m. The 54-hole event officially begins on Sunday as the Skyhawks will tee off on Hole No. 1 in 10-minute intervals between 8:50 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. UT Martin will be playing alongside SIUE and Tennessee State for the opening round. The second round is set for Monday while the final round will take place on Tuesday.
The weather forecast for Muscle Shoals calls for sunny skies and a high of 77 degrees for Sunday's first round. Monday's high is slated to be 80 degrees with morning clouds while Tuesday's high temperature is projected to be 83 degrees with partly cloudy skies. The wind is tentatively scheduled to be between 6-7 mph while a 10 percent chance of precipitation is scheduled for all three days of the event.
The Skyhawks currently rank third in the league in scoring average (291.8) as head coach Jerry Carpenter's lineup for the OVC Championships is all set. Ross Redmont is slotted at No. 1 and is followed by Nick Wolf at No. 2, Tate Chumley at No. 3, Jack Story at No. 4 and Cameron Smith at No. 5.
Redmont's 71.9 scoring average this season is tied for the third-best mark in the OVC, just 0.2 strokes off the leader. The redshirt junior from Memphis, Tenn. also leads UT Martin in top-five finishes (three) and has a low round of 67 this season. He will be making his second career OVC Championships appearance, as his low round in the tournament is a third-round 73 from 2018.
An All-OVC golfer from a year ago, Wolf carries a 73.6 season scoring average into the OVC Championships. Three of his four top-16 tournament finishes have occurred this spring as the sophomore from Murfreesboro, Tenn. will also appear in his second consecutive OVC Championships event. His 2018-19 low round is a 68 while his best career OVC Championships score is a final-round 74 from last season.
Chumley ranks 13th in the OVC with a 72.9 stroke average as he also is responsible for the team lead in top-five finishes (three) and top-10 finishes (six). His 66 from the SIUE Derek Dolenc Invitational is the lowest round of any Skyhawk this season. The sophomore from Murfreesboro, Tenn. will make his second career OVC Championships appearance (low round of 73 in last year's third round).
A junior from Dickson, Tenn., Story is playing his best golf of the season as he is averaging a 71.7 stroke average with a pair of top-11 finishes since the calendar flipped to April. On the season, he is averaging a 74.6 stroke average with a low round of 68 in the regular season finale at the TSU Big Blue Intercollegiate. He is making his third OVC Championship appearance as his tournament low round is a 73 (achieved in both the 2017 second round and 2018 first round).
Making his OVC Championship debut is Smith, a senior out of Brentwood, Tenn. He has tallied five rounds of par or below par in 2018-19, leading to a 75.1 scoring average. His low round (69) and best tournament finish (13th) took place at the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate in the final fall tournament of the season. He has produced 14 countable scores out of a possible 18 rounds in 2018-19.
