MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. – For the second straight day, the University of Tennessee at Martin golf team managed an improved score as the Skyhawks completed the final round of the 2019 Ohio Valley Conference Championships strong today.
UT Martin carded a 291 (+3) during Round 3 of the tournament after collecting scores of 303 and 294 on the first two days. The Skyhawks tapped in 14 birdie putts on the day and ended the 2019 event with a final score of 888 (+24), ranking ninth in the 11-team field.
"Today was our best day of the tournament," UT Martin head coach Jerry Carpenter said. "We could have been a couple of strokes better than what we finished but coming in, we probably took a few more chances than we normally would with our given situation. I applaud our team – all of our guys improved from yesterday and that was important. I appreciate what they've done this year."
Ross Redmont and Nick Wolf shared the team lead today as each player shot a 70 (-2). Redmont notched three straight birdies on the front nine and had four overall birdies with only one double bogey to go along with 13 pars. Wolf also only had one mishap – a bogey on Hole No. 6 – before tallying three birdies and 14 pars throughout the round.
Tate Chumley picked up a pair of birdies on the day before finishing with a 74 (+2). Cameron Smith piled up both of his birdies during a three-hole span on the front nine and completed his round with a countable score of 77 (+5). Jack Story knocked in three birdies and was 1-under par through 10 holes before generating a final tally of 78 (+6).
Chumley was the top Skyhawk representative in the final individual standings, as his even-par 216 performance was good enough for 16th place. Redmont and Wolf each placed 24th with identical 218's (+2) and were followed by Smith (237, +21) and Story (244, +28).
Jacksonville State (836, -28) won the OVC's team championship and also produced the individual medalist in Jesus Montenegro (204, -12).
