MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin tennis team collected its first Ohio Valley Conference win of the season this afternoon, defeating Tennessee State by a 6-1 margin at the Skyhawk Tennis Complex.
          Â
UT Martin (3-8, 1-2 OVC) put on a near-perfect display of tennis today, winning each of its first seven decisions. As a result, the Skyhawks improved to 23-0 all-time against the Tigers.
          Â
"I thought we did extremely well today," UT Martin head coach Dennis Taylor. "We were ready to play – we've had two OVC matches previously that came down to two or three points and we dropped those. I was looking to see how they responded and it got tough today but they responded well. There were several people who had to play well in order for us to win and they did just that."
          Â
The Skyhawks began play by taking the doubles point. Andrea Plantada and Amelia Campbell produced a 6-3 victory at No. 3 while Asel Jumamukhambetova and Jemima Potter earned a 6-4 triumph in the No. 1 slot.
          Â
Singles action began with a 7-6, 6-1 victory by Plantada at No. 4. Potter followed with a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 2 while Campbell's 6-1, 6-7, 6-2 victory at No. 5 clinched the victory for UT Martin. Jumamukhambetova used an impressive comeback to down her opponent at No. 1, 4-6, 7-5, 6-0 while Jule Streif notched a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 6. The Skyhawks almost came away with a clean sweep but freshman Daphne Pratt was barely outlasted at No. 3 (6-7, 6-4, 6-4).
          Â
UT Martin goes on the road for each of its next three matches, including a pair of matchups later this weekend. The Skyhawks travel to Murray State on Friday, April 5 before heading to Austin Peay on Saturday, April 6.
