OVC TITANS UT MARTIN AND BELMONT SET FOR OVC BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE MATCH
3/9/2019 12:32:00 AM | Women's Basketball
The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team will make its seventh Ohio Valley Conference Basketball Championship title game appearance in the past 10 years on Saturday, March 9 with a matchup against top-seed Belmont. Tipoff from the Ford Center is scheduled for 2 p.m. and will be broadcast exclusively on ESPN+.
This marks the second consecutive year and third time since 2014 that UT Martin and Belmont have meet in the championship round. The Skyhawks have made seven appearances in the championship game under the direction of head coach Kevin McMillan while winning four consecutive titles in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014. Between the two programs, UT Martin and Belmont have combined to win seven of the last eight tournament championships. Overall, the Skyhawks are 17-6 in tournament play and 6-1 in the Ford Center all-time.
The Skyhawks (23-8) advanced to the championship round by making quick work of No. 6 seed Murray State in the quarterfinals (77-56) before using a second-half comeback to surge past No. 2 seed Morehead State (68-58) in the finals. Now playing their third game in as many days, the Skyhawks will look to senior guard Emanye Robertson to lead the team back to the NCAA Tournament. Recently named to the All-OVC first team and OVC Defensive Player of the Year, Robertson will make her ninth and final OVC Tournament appearance in Saturday's action. Throughout her career in tournament play, she has scored 118 points to average 14.7 points per game – including 22.5 points per game in this year's championship quest.
Belmont (25-6) enters the championship round for the fourth consecutive season after winning back-to-back-to-back tournament titles dating back to 2016. A mainstay in the Bruins mini-dynasty has been the play of OVC Player of the Year Darby Maggard who recently notched her 2,000th point in a win against No. 4 seed Tennessee Tech in the semifinals. Maggard averages 17.5 points and 4.3 assists per game. Joining in the action is the play of fellow All-OVC first teamer Ellie Harmeyer with 16.7 points and 9.0 rebounds per game while senior Jenny Roy averages 9.2 points, 7.8 rebounds and 5.6 assists per game.
The two teams split the regular season meetings with each team winning on its own home court. On Feb. 2, Belmont notched a 100-86 home victory while UT Martin came out victorious on Feb. 28 with a 71-68 overtime classic. Both teams have also split the previous four tournament matchups with the Skyhawks winning in 2014 and 2015 while the Bruins countered in 2017 and 2018.
The game will be streamed live on ESPN+. Fans can also tune into WCMT 1410 AM, 100.5 FM, 92.7 FM, 96.1 FM, 99.7 FM and 103.3 FM to hear Tom Britt (play-by-play) and Chris Brinkley (color) provide analysis. WUTM, UT Martin's award-winning student radio station, will also broadcast the game on 90.3 FM.
