
SKYHAWK TENNIS CLOSES OUT NONCONFERENCE PLAY ON HIGH NOTE, DOWNING VALDOSTA STATE BY A 5-2 MARGIN

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The University of Tennessee at Martin tennis team captured the doubles point and never looked back this afternoon, earning its first win of the spring with a 5-2 decision at Valdosta State.

The Skyhawks (2-6) started off with the early momentum, claiming victories at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Asel Jumamukhambetova/Jemima Potter and Daphne Pratt/Mizuki Sakurai each accounted for 6-2 wins at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, to give UT Martin the 1-0 lead. Andrea Plantada and Amelia Campbell were also embroiled in a battle at No. 3 before falling by a slim 6-4 margin.

Jumamukhambetova breezed through a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles while Sakurai was responsible for a 6-1, 6-2 triumph at No. 5. Campbell pushed through for a 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 4 while Potter rose up for a come-from-behind 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory in the No. 2 slot.

The only singles matchups that the Blazers would win came in tiebreaking third sets. Pratt battled but fell 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 at No. 3 while Jule Streif was defeated 6-3, 3-6, 10-6 at No. 6.

UT Martin will enjoy some considerable time off from official competition before it opens Ohio Valley Conference play on Friday, March 22 at Southeast Missouri.
