UT MARTIN BEGINS OHIO VALLEY CONFERENCE TENNIS PLAY ON FRIDAY AT SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

MARTIN, Tenn. – After five fall tournaments and eight matches to start off the 2018-19 season, the University of Tennessee at Martin tennis team opens Ohio Valley Conference action at Southeast Missouri on Friday, March 22 at 2 p.m.
The Skyhawks are 26-2 all-time against the Redhawks, owning a 20-match winning streak over Southeast Missouri. Individually, Andrea Plantada is a perfect 4-0 against the Redhawks in her career, going 2-0 in both singles and doubles action. Jemima Potter also boasts four career victories against the Redhawks, including an unblemished 3-0 mark in doubles.
UT Martin enters conference season with a 2-6 overall record as the Skyhawks faced a stacked spring schedule. Overall, the Skyhawks have excelled in doubles play throughout the 2018-19 campaign – posting a 34-28 record in such situations.
Preseason OVC top-10 player Asel Jumamukhambetova leads the team with 13 singles victories, including a team-high three wins during the spring season while playing exclusively in the No. 1 slot. In doubles, Jumamukhambetova, Plantada and Amelia Campbell all lead the way with 11 victories while Daphne Pratt and Mizuki Sakurai pace UT Martin with four victories (mainly at No. 2) in the spring.
Coached by former Skyhawk and 2007 All-OVC tennis honoree Mary Beth Gunn, Southeast Missouri went 7-5 overall during the nonconference portion of its schedule. The Redhawks have claimed two of the five OVC Players of the Week so far this season in Kseniya Zonova (Feb. 20) and Romana Tarajova (Feb. 27). Zonova was ranked No. 6 on the OVC Preseason Top-10 list after an All-OVC second team nod in 2017-18.
