BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – University of Tennessee at Martin redshirt junior guard Craig Randall II joined an exclusive list today as he became just the 11th player in Ohio Valley Conference history to nab the league's Newcomer of the Week honors on three consecutive occasions.
Randall, who also won the award on Feb. 18 and Feb. 25, joins Brian Foster (2000-01) as the only Skyhawks to ever win the OVC's top newcomer honor three weeks in a row. In addition, only Austin Peay's Donald Tivis (1988-89), Tennessee Tech's Damien Kinloch (2001-02), Tennessee State's Rod Flowers (2004-05), Austin Peay's Tyshwan Edmondson (2010-11), Southeast Missouri's Leon Powell (2010-11), Southeast Missouri's Jarekious Bradley (2013-14), Murray State's Jarvis Williams (2013-14), Murray State's Jonathan Stark (2016-17) and Austin Peay's Averyl Ugba (2017-18) have accomplished that feat as the league began recognizing a Newcomer of the Week during the 1985-86 season.
Randall averaged 16.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game as the Skyhawks split against co-regular season champion Belmont (lost 112-67) and Tennessee State (won 91-86). He knocked down 56 percent (14-for-25) of his field goal attempts to help UT Martin earn the No. 7 seed in this week's OVC Basketball Championship tournament.
The Youngstown, Ohio native started his week off with a team-high 17 points, four rebounds, two assists and a steal against Belmont on Thursday. Randall followed that with 16 points (on 7-of-9 shooting), six rebounds, three assists and a steal during Saturday's win over Tennessee State in the regular season finale.
On the season, Randall is pumping in 16.7 points per game to go along with 3.3 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.1 steals per outing. Since being cleared by the NCAA to play as a mid-year transfer from Duquesne on Jan. 31, the 6-4, 185-pound southpaw has scored at least 16 points in eight of his 10 games in a Skyhawk uniform.
UT Martin nabbed the No. 7 seed in this week's OVC Championship tournament and will clash against No. 6 Eastern Illinois in the first round on Wednesday, March 6 at 8:30 p.m. in Evansville, Ind.
