MARTIN, Tenn. – A threat of thunderstorms this weekend has forced the University of Tennessee at Martin tennis program to shuffle its home schedule. The Friday, March 29 match against Belmont is still on for 2 p.m. but the originally scheduled Saturday, March 30 match against Tennessee State has been postponed to Monday, April 1 at 1 p.m.
The Skyhawks (2-7, 0-1 Ohio Valley Conference) will go for their first league victories this week as UT Martin holds a 9-3 all-time mark against Belmont and an unblemished 22-0 record all-time against Tennessee State.
Jemima Potter and Andrea Plantada each own four career victories against Belmont, including a perfect 3-0 doubles mark by Potter. Asel Jumamukhambetova has also produced three victories against the Bruins while Mizuki Sakurai (singles) and Amelia Campbell (doubles) were each responsible for a victory during last season's meeting, a 5-2 Skyhawk win.
Jumamukhambetova is undefeated (5-0) in her career against Tennessee State, which includes a 3-0 singles mark. Potter (four combined wins) and Plantada (two singles wins) have also enjoyed success against the Tigers in their careers while Jule Streif (singles), Olha Burak (doubles) and Sakurai (doubles) also won their debuts against Tennessee State during last season's 5-2 triumph.
During the 2018-19 campaign, Jumamukhambetova's 14 singles wins rank as a team-best while her and Campbell each brought home an OVC singles win during UT Martin's narrow 5-2 setback at Southeast Missouri last Friday. The trio of Jumamukhambetova, Plantada and Campbell each guide the Skyhawks with 11 doubles wins on the season.
Belmont (7-6, 0-1 OVC) opened OVC play with a 6-1 home loss against Murray State last Sunday. Freshman Peyton Lee has led the way for the Bruins with 12 singles wins while Maria Plaksina was responsible for the team's lone singles win against Murray State at No. 4. Freshman Lauren Carelli owns a team-best 12-4 doubles record so far in 2018-19.
Tennessee State (5-8, 0-2 OVC) enters the matchup on a five-match losing streak, including a pair of 7-0 conference setbacks against Murray State and Austin Peay last weekend. Sophomore Aarushi Kakkar, who was named OVC Tennis Player of the Week on March 6, guides the Tigers in both singles victories (seven) and doubles wins (five) while Claudia Sole is also tied for the team lead with seven singles wins.
