MARTIN, Tenn. – While the weather does not represent the fifth day of spring, the University of Tennessee at Martin football team slapped on an extra layer of clothing and hit the gridiron of Hardy Graham Stadium on Wednesday afternoon for practice #1 of the official spring practice schedule.
The Skyhawks began their quest for an Ohio Valley Conference championship on a cool March afternoon with the first of 15 scheduled practices. For head coach Jason Simpson who is beginning his 14th season at the helm of the UT Martin football program, this year's spring schedule represents a time for growth and development.
"It was good to get back out here and look forward to the 2019 season. Today is the start of that," Simpson said. "We came out of the weight room with a good offseason, and now it is time to get out here and play some football. We have some holes to fill, some young guys that need to play and some people that need to take the next step in their careers as they grow into their roles as playmakers or impact players on defense. That's part of our emphasis and I'm looking forward to that."
Some of the key storylines to watch throughout spring ball and into fall camp will be the development of the linebacker core and offensive line along with valuable reps at the quarterback position by returners Joe Hudson and John Bachus III while Dresser Winn recovers from season-ending surgery.
UT Martin will participate in three more practices this week on Wednesday (3:45 p.m.), Friday (3:15 p.m.) and Sunday (2:30 p.m.) – weather permitting.
