MARTIN, Tenn. – Five teams will vie for the 2019 United Equestrian Conference championship this week as the University of Tennessee at Martin plays host to the three-day tournament on March 21-23. Admission is free to the event.
          Â
All competitions will begin at 10 a.m. at the Ned McWherter Agricultural Pavilion with two arenas going simultaneously (indoor and outdoor). The event begins on Thursday, March 21 when No. 4 seed UT Martin takes on No. 5 South Dakota State in the quarterfinal round. The winner advances to play No. 1 SMU on Friday, March 22 while No. 2 Delaware State also battles No. 3 Fresno State in the semifinals that same day.           Â
The tournament involves three current representatives in the National Collegiate Equestrian Association top-10 rankings (No. 6 SMU, No. 9 Fresno State and No. 10 UT Martin). Delaware State and South Dakota State also regularly appeared in the national top-10 poll during the early stages of the 2018-19 season.
          Â
SMU is 7-4 overall and claimed the top seed in the tournament after going a perfect 3-0 in UEC play. Delaware State (4-7) tallied a 3-2 mark against UEC competition while Fresno State (4-7) and UT Martin (4-6) each went 2-2 against league foes. South Dakota State went 1-7 this season with an 0-3 conference mark.
          Â
This is the second time that the Skyhawks have hosted the UEC Championship.
