BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – In the final primer prior to the Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Championship later this month, the University of Tennessee at Martin track and field squads continued to rewrite the program record books with three school records at the Hoosier Hills Invitational on Friday evening.
For the second straight week much of the highlights focused on the performance of redshirt-freshman Tyreke Sapp and junior Oisin O'Gailin. Much like at the Don DeNoon Invitational, Sapp and O'Gailin broke their own records to combine for three new program benchmarks.
Sapp began his record-setting evening in the Hoosier State in the men's 60m dash. After breaking a 20-year program record a week ago, he bested that performance on Friday with a time of 6.88 second to narrowly finish second in the field. He then continued his success later in the day in the men's 200m dash. He would not only notch an event victory in the 200m dash but best his previous school record by 10 full seconds.
Another school record went by the wayside in the men's 3k run. After notching a school record in the men's mile a week ago, O'Gailin broke another school record, this time in the 3k with a time of 8:18.71 seconds to finish as the event runner-up.
Along with the record-setting performances, several other Skyhawks posted impressive outings against the field. Freshman Brady Fry reached the final in the men's 60m hurdles after tying his PR at 8.34 seconds. Meanwhile, senior Jonathan Conley notched a third place finish while posting a new lifetime best of 1:53.4 seconds in the 800m run followed by Leonel Perez who rolled to a strong 4:17.23 mile showing. The day was capped off with yet another outstanding showing by freshman Breanna Alderton with a third place finish and a sub-five mile at 4;57.61.
UT Martin will conclude the indoor portion of the track season by competing at the OVC Indoor Championship located in Birmingham, Ala. on Wednesday, Feb. 20 through Thursday, Feb. 21.
