BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of Tennessee at Martin tennis squad began its spring schedule this afternoon, falling by a 6-1 margin at Samford.

Senior Asel Jumamukhambetova accounted for the Skyhawk victory today, as she downed Samford's Grace Jennings by a 6-4, 6-1 score at No. 1 singles. However, the Southern Conference opponent managed to win the other five singles decisions after also claiming the doubles point to start off the match.

Amelia Campbell teamed with Jule Streif at No. 3 doubles but fell by a 6-3 margin. UT Martin was also represented in doubles by Jumamukhambetova/Jemima Potter (No. 1) and Daphne Pratt/Mizuki Sakurai (No. 2) but both teams came up short by scores of 6-2.

Jumamukhambetova's convincing win at No. 1 was the highlight in singles play as the Skyhawks could not find the momentum for a comeback. Streif battled at No. 6 but was defeated 7-5, 6-2. Pratt also put up a fight at No. 3 but came up short by a 7-6, 6-1 margin. Campbell (6-2, 6-2 at No. 4), Potter (6-1, 6-0 at No. 2) and Sakurai (6-0, 6-0 at No. 5) all competed for UT Martin in singles play but could not come away victorious.

The Skyhawks continue their spring-opening road trip on Friday, Feb. 8 when they visit Southeastern Conference rival Alabama. First serve from Tuscaloosa, Ala. is set for 6 p.m.
