MARTIN, Tenn. – The 2019 University of Tennessee at Martin spring tennis season begins this week as the Skyhawks go on the road for a trio of matches. UT Martin will visit Samford on Thursday, Feb. 7 before heading to Alabama on Friday, Feb. 8 and Middle Tennessee on Sunday, Feb. 10.
The Skyhawks will look to build off a strong fall, as UT Martin tallied a .600 winning percentage over five tournaments and one head-to-head match. The Skyhawks piled up 49 victories to go along with 29 doubles wins as all eight UT Martin players saw extensive playing time.
Head coach Dennis Taylor rolls out a veteran roster in 2019, as seven of the eight players return from last season. Four seniors, three sophomores and one freshman will look to lead the Skyhawks to the Ohio Valley Conference tournament for the 26th time in 27 seasons at the NCAA Division I level.
Last month, the OVC tabbed Asel Jumamukhambetova as the league's seventh-best returner. The senior from Atyrau, Kazakhstan tallied All-OVC honors in 2016-17 and is coming off a fall where she notched team-highs in both singles wins (10) and doubles wins (10) while playing at No. 1. She is responsible for 110 career wins in her collegiate career.
Jemima Potter will look to extend her doubles dominance into the spring, as the senior from Northampton, England has won 68 of the 99 doubles decisions in her career. That includes a remarkable .840 winning percentage against OVC opposition.
Senior Andrea Plantada also returns for UT Martin in 2019. The Puzol, Spain native tied for the team lead with 10 doubles victories in the fall while boasting a 32-9 career record (.780 winning percentage) in OVC play.
Olha Burak was a mainstay in the Skyhawk lineup during OVC play last season, picking up 11 wins during her second full year in the program. That came after the senior from Lviv, Ukraine combined to go 12-4 overall as a sophomore in 2016-17.
Tying Plantada for the team lead with 10 doubles victories this fall was sophomore Amelia Campbell. The London, England native soared to a 6-2 OVC doubles record while tacking on a pair of OVC singles wins at No. 6 last season.
Hailing from Tokyo, Japan, sophomore Mizuki Sakurai enjoyed immense success this fall, combining for a 14-8 record in singles and doubles. She generated 12 overall victories during her debut season while seeing time in all nine OVC matches in 2017-18.
Sophomore Jule Streif is coming off a fall season where she managed a 6-4 singles record. The Oberkirch, Germany native showed promise while primarily playing at No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles as a true freshman last season.
Daphne Pratt was highly successful in her first taste of collegiate tennis this fall, winning 72.2 percent of her decisions. The freshman from London, England earned a 6-2 record in singles competition to go along with a 7-3 mark in doubles action.
