UT MARTIN AND BELMONT SET FOR BATTLE OF OVC GIANTS ON THURSDAY NIGHT
2/26/2019 6:18:00 PM | Women's Basketball
The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team will look to defend its home court of the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center through the final week of the regular season with a matchup against Ohio Valley Conference champion Belmont on Thursday, Feb. 28. Tipoff from the Elam Center is scheduled for 5:30 p.m., will be broadcast exclusively on ESPN+ and serves as UT Martin Faculty Appreciation Night.
The matchup will pit two of the league's perennial championship contenders in UT Martin and Belmont against each other. The Skyhawks won four OVC regular season titles and four OVC tournament titles over the course of five seasons while the Bruins finally broke through with back-to-back undefeated seasons, three OVC Championships and three straight NCAA Tournament berths since 2015-16. Dating back to the 2011-12 season, UT Martin (103-27, 79.2 percent) and Belmont (92-21, 81.4 percent) have combined to post a 195-48 (80.2 percent) overall record against conference foes. The two programs have also combined to tab seven OVC regular season titles and seven of the last eight NCAA Tournament berths.
The Skyhawks (19-8, 11-5 OVC) enter the contest looking to secure a top-four seed in next week's OVC Basketball Championship while currently sitting in a three-way tie for second place in the league standings. UT Martin is coming off a comeback victory on the road, overcoming a 16-point deficit to notch a 59-58 win at Austin Peay following a game-winning jumper by Damiah Griffin with 20 seconds to play and back-to-back defensive stops to secure the contest. Highlighting the Skyhawks strong play in the second half was the bench play of Griffin who tallied 10 points and five rebounds while sophomore Demi Burdick chipped in nine points and seven rebounds.
Belmont (21-5, 14-1 OVC) recently clinched its third consecutive OVC regular season title behind the dynamic play of standouts Darby Maggard and Ellie Harmeyer. Maggard makes her final appearance in the Elam Center after a decorated career, averaging 16.8 points and 4.4 assists per game while recently breaking former Skyhawk guard Heather Butler's OVC three-point record by knocking down 409 in her career. Meanwhile, Harmeyer enters the contest averaging 16.7 points and 9.0 rebounds per game.
Thursday's matchup marks the 35th meeting between the two programs in series history. Belmont holds a 23-11 series advantage – including a four-game winning streak against UT Martin. The Skyhawks are trying to notch their first victory over the Bruins since an 81-79 win at home on Feb. 15, 2016 while UT Martin has won three of the last four games played in the Elam Center.
The game will be streamed live on ESPN+.
