BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – For the second consecutive week, University of Tennessee at Martin guard Craig Randall II has been crowned as the Ohio Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week, the league office announced this afternoon.
A 6-4, 185-pound redshirt junior, Randall averaged 26.0 points on 52.8 percent shooting (19-of-36) against two of the league's top teams in Murray State and Austin Peay. He connected on 45 percent of his three-point attempts (9-for-20) and was a perfect 5-of-5 from the charity stripe this week.
Randall began his week with a team-best 19 points, three rebounds and a pair of assists in 35 minutes against OVC co-leader Murray State. Two days later at Austin Peay, he went on a scoring spree to the tune of 33 points – shattering his previous career-high of 21 points when he played at Memphis. Randall was incredibly efficient from the floor, knocking down 12 of his 18 shot attempts which included a 6-of-10 effort from three-point range. It marked the first 30-plus point game for a Skyhawk against an OVC opponent in nearly two years (since Feb. 25, 2017).
Randall's offensive prowess has been on full display since making his UT Martin debut on Jan. 31. He has tossed in at least 16 points in six of his eight games and is averaging 20.2 points over the last five outings. The Youngstown, Ohio native leads the Skyhawks with 16.8 points per game.
Randall is only the fifth player in school history to win back-to-back OVC Newcomer of the Week awards, joining Deville Smith (January 2015), Delrico Lane (December 2008), Lester Hudson (January 2008) and Brian Foster (February 2001).
UT Martin continues its charge towards a spot in the OVC Championship tournament this week with a pair of home games to conclude the regular season. The Skyhawks host Belmont on Thursday, Feb. 28 and Tennessee State on Saturday, March 2.
