GOODYEAR, Ariz. – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team was one of just seven teams to shoot under par during the third and final round of the Loyola Intercollegiate, played at the Palm Valley Golf Club.
After the Skyhawks combined for 14 birdies through the first two rounds of the tournament, UT Martin carded 19 birdies during today's third round. As a result, the Skyhawks shot a 286 (-2) to finish 16th in the final team standings with an overall tally of 893 (+29).
"If we shoot under par, you'll never hear me complain," UT Martin head coach Jerry Carpenter said. "We played well today – I was really proud of everybody. Today's score showed us what we can do – this group is capable of shooting these types of scores every time they step on the golf course. Winding up on a positive note should give our team some confidence."
Tate Chumley piled up seven birdies alone today, shooting a 67 (-5). The sophomore from Murfreesboro, Tenn. had only two bogeys while adding nine pars during the round.
Nick Wolf shot an even-par 72 today as all four of his birdies came in his final 14 holes. Ross Redmont also added a trio of birdies during the round on his way to a 73 (+1). Cameron Smith completed the Skyhawks' team scoring with a tally of 74 (+2), compiling a pair of birdies on the day.
Peyton Dix (75, +3) tapped in three birdie putts today, two of which came over his final three holes of the round.
Jumping up 33 spots in the individual standings was Chumley, who placed 17th in the tournament field with an overall score of 217 (+1). Redmont was the next best finished for UT Martin with a 222 (+6) and was followed by Wolf (227, +11), Dix (230, +14) and Smith (233, +17).
The Skyhawks return to action on March 11-12 when they host the Grover Page Classic. The tournament will once again be held at the Jackson Country Club in Jackson, Tenn.
