STRONG FOURTH QUARTER PUSH NOT ENOUGH TO LIFT SKYHAWK WOMEN’S HOOPS TO WIN AT MURRAY STATE

MURRAY, Ky. – The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team used a strong fourth quarter comeback in an effort to overcome an 18-point deficit, but ultimately saw the team's potential game-tying three-pointer at the buzzer come up short, falling 76-73 at Murray State.
The Skyhawks (18-8, 10-5 OVC) struggled from the field throughout the contest, shooting 28 percent from the floor in the opening three quarters to dig themselves a hole. UT Martin would trail by as much as 18 points in the game while trimming the deficit to as close as one point with four seconds to play with a strong fourth quarter - scoring 32 points - but could not take a lead in the second half.
Five players scored in double figures for the Skyhawks as sophomore guard Zaire Hicks and freshman Damiah Griffin paced the squad with 13 points each. Freshman Brittni Moore also filled the stat sheet with 12 points, seven rebounds and five steals while Emanye Robertson and Demi Burdick scored 12 and 10 points, respectively.
"We had too many turnovers, missed free throws and missed open layups," UT Martin head coach Kevin McMillan said. "We simply weren't mature enough to handle the grind. We didn't feel like playing today and didn't show up until there were about six minutes left in the game. We have figured out ways to win so they don't learn, but this will be the first loss that hopefully we can learn from. We did not need to win this game for the future, we needed this loss. We fought the last six minutes of the game, but it's the first 34 minutes that were the difference in the game."
Murray State (11-15, 7-8 OVC) posted a big win for the squad fighting for an OVC Championship berth in two weeks. The Racers saw four different players score in double figures, including 21 points, five rebounds and five steals from freshman Macey Turley while Evelyn Adebayo tallied 18 points and 12 rebounds. The pair of Janika Griffith-Wallace and Lex Mayes also scored in double figures with 19 and 13 points, respectively.
UT Martin will wrap up the road portion of the regular season with a matchup at Austin Peay on Saturday, Feb. 23. Tipoff from the Dunn Center is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
