MARTIN, Tenn. – One of the hottest teams in the Ohio Valley Conference is the University of Tennessee at Martin, who goes for its fourth straight men's hoops victory when it opens a three-game road stretch against SIUE. Tipoff from the Vadalabene Center in Edwardsville, Ill. is set for 2 p.m.
The Skyhawks (9-15, 4-9 OVC) have won three straight games and four of their last six as UT Martin chases a season sweep of the host Cougars. Just three weeks ago, the Skyhawk surge began with an 85-69 victory over SIUE, led by the junior duo of Quintin Dove (25 points) and Derek Hawthorne, Jr. (20 points). UT Martin has emerged victorious in each of its last three visits to the Vadalabene Center, having not lost in Edwardsville since 2015.
On Thursday, the Skyhawks never trailed in an 81-72 wire-to-wire triumph over Southeast Missouri. Preston Parks went off for a season-high 26 points as UT Martin led by as many as 25 points less than nine minutes into the contest. The Skyhawks connected on 61.2 percent (30-of-49) of its field goal tries, marking the best single-game OVC performance for UT Martin since a 61.9 percent effort against Jacksonville State on Feb. 2, 2012.
The Skyhawks have recently received a big lift from junior guard Craig Randall II. Since joining the team on Jan. 7 and making his UT Martin debut on Jan. 31, the southpaw has taken over the team lead in scoring (13.2 points per game) while also notching 3.6 assists, 2.4 rebounds and 1.6 steals per outing.
After winning three of four OVC decisions from Jan. 24 through Feb. 2, SIUE (8-17, 4-9 OVC) has lost its last three league games. That includes a 79-65 home setback against Eastern Illinois on Thursday, despite Brandon Jackson (16 points, 10 rebounds) nabbing the third double-double of his junior campaign.
Senior guard David McFarland is averaging 15.3 points over three career games against the Skyhawks, including a team-best 19 points earlier this season.
