MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball team squares off against Belmont in an Ohio Valley Conference showdown at the Curb Event Center on Saturday, Feb. 2. Tipoff in Nashville is scheduled for approximately 5 p.m.
Through the midway point of the OVC season, the Skyhawks have simply ran into some tough luck. Five of UT Martin's eight conference losses have been by five points or less, including a pair of overtime setbacks.
The Skyhawks (6-14, 1-8 OVC) are coming off a gut-wrenching 68-67 loss at Tennessee State on Thursday. In that game, Delfincko Bogan broke a tie with a rare four-point play with 1:04 to go but the Tigers ended the contest with five unanswered points - including the eventual game-winning bucket with 3.3 seconds remaining. Craig Randall II compiled a team-high 17 points for UT Martin, just days after he was cleared by the NCAA to play following a mid-year transfer from Duquesne.
The Skyhawks lead the all-time series against the Bruins by a 20-17 margin but have not defeated their in-state rival in six tries since Belmont joined the OVC in the 2012-13 season. Last year in Martin, the Bruins came away with a 65-58 victory despite a big night from Skyhawk center Jailen Gill (15 points on 6-of-8 shooting, career-high three blocks).
Belmont (16-4, 7-2 OVC) boasts one of the most lethal offensive attacks in the nation, entering the week ranking in the top-10 nationally in assists (19.4 per game, fourth), scoring offense (86.9 points per game, sixth) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.5, seventh). Dylan Windler (19.2 points per game, third), Kevin McClain (16.0, fifth) and Nick Muszynski (15.8, sixth) have all heavily contributed to Belmont's high-powered offense, each ranking in the top-six in the OVC in scoring average.
The Bruins cruised to a 97-71 victory over Southeast Missouri on Thursday. The trio of McClain (31), Muszynski (27) and Windler (23) combined for 83.5 percent of Belmont's scoring while Windler also nabbed a game-high 16 rebounds.
