NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball team battled throughout today's game but couldn't overcome a hot-shooting Belmont squad in an 82-67 setback at the Curb Event Center.
All eight active Skyhawks scored this afternoon, led by Quintin Dove's 14 points on 7-of-12 shooting. Delfincko Bogan scored 12 points and equaled a career-high with seven rebounds while Derek Hawthorne, Jr. collected 12 points and six rebounds. UT Martin (6-15, 1-9 Ohio Valley Conference) committed only six turnovers but shot 39.7 percent (29-of-73) from the floor.
Belmont (17-4, 8-2 OVC) received double-doubles out of both Dylan Windler (23 points, 13 rebounds) and Nick Muszynski (16 points, 10 rebounds). Kevin McClain tied a game-high with 23 points while Nick Hopkins added 15 points for a Bruins squad that shot an even 50 percent (30-for-60) – including 14 three-pointers.
"We had Belmont contained for three-quarters of that game but they got hot during one stretch," Skyhawk head coach Anthony Stewart. "We stuck to the gameplan but they have some great players and a great coaching staff. I thought we competed and didn't quit. Our guys gave their all."
It was a one-possession game for nearly the entire first half. Jailen Gill scored UT Martin's first four points before a Bogan trifecta at the 9:41 mark gave the Skyhawks their first lead of the day at 20-19. The Bruins accounted for the next six points before Dove (four consecutive points) and Preston Parks (three-pointer) trimmed their deficit to 32-30 with 2:22 to go before the break. However, Belmont wrapped up the first half on an 8-2 run to lead 40-32 at the intermission. Dove and Hawthorne each tallied 10 points while Windler's 15 points were a team-high for the Bruins at the half.
Dove struck for UT Martin's first four points in the second half as the Skyhawks crept back to make it a two-possession ballgame. Another 6-0 Belmont run followed but Bogan converted a tough layup in traffic to make it a single-digit deficit (54-46) with 11:51 left to play. The Bruins would soon post an 18-4 run to create some separation, although UT Martin did end the game on a 13-3 run over the last 3:29.
The Skyhawks now return home for a season-long three-game homestand, starting on Thursday, Feb. 7 against Jacksonville State. The game – which is the backend of a doubleheader with the Skyhawk women's basketball team – will tip off at approximately 7:30 p.m. at the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center.
