MARTIN, Tenn. – A three-game homestand for the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball team starts with an Ohio Valley Conference matchup against the Jacksonville State Gamecocks. Tipoff from the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center is set for approximately 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 7 – immediately following the Skyhawk women's game.
The Skyhawks (6-15, 1-9 OVC) will go for their second straight victory over Jacksonville State, as UT Martin dialed up a 67-63 road win last season. Fatodd Lewis also came up big for the Skyhawks, knocking down the go-ahead bucket with 29 seconds remaining to wrap up a 10-point, nine-rebound performance.
UT Martin is coming off an 82-67 setback at Belmont on Saturday. The Skyhawks committed only six turnovers but were held below 40 percent shooting for just the third time in conference play. Quintin Dove tossed in 14 points while Bogan and Derek Hawthorne, Jr. each collected 12 points apiece for UT Martin.
Two of the league's top rebounding squads will be on display during this game, as the Skyhawks lead the OVC in offensive rebounding (12.8 per game) and offensive rebounding percentage (.330). Meanwhile, the Gamecocks top the league with a +5.1 rebounding margin.
Jacksonville State (16-7, 8-2 OVC) is currently in a four-way tie with Austin Peay, Belmont and Murray State for first place in the OVC standings. The Gamecocks swept the two-game season series against Belmont and split matchups against the other two first-place teams (won 88-68 over Murray State, lost 74-71 to Austin Peay) last week.
Jason Burnell leads Jacksonville State in scoring (15.3 points per game), rebounding (9.3 per game) and assists (3.1 per game) while playing a league-high 37.1 minutes per contest in conference play. In addition to rebounding margin, the Gamecocks also pace the OVC in field goal percentage defense (.402) and free throw percentage (.735).
