BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – The Ohio Valley Conference unveiled its first edition of the 2019-20 Commissioner's Cup standings today and the University of Tennessee at Martin ranks second out of 12 member institutions.
The Skyhawks have accumulated 43.5 points through the league's fall championships, trailing only Southeast Missouri (48.5). Following UT Martin is Eastern Kentucky (39.5), Murray State (38.5), Eastern Illinois (31.5), Belmont (30.5), Austin Peay (30), Tennessee Tech (30), SIUE (28.5), Morehead State (27.5), Jacksonville State (25.5) and Tennessee State (11.5).
A total of five Skyhawk programs have tallied points so far, led by football (10 points) and soccer (10 points). The men's cross country team contributed nine points, women's cross country chipped in eight points while the volleyball squad generated 6.5 points.
Implemented in 2008-09, the OVC Commissioner's Cup is a symbol of overall athletic excellence in Conference-sponsored championships and is awarded annually to one member institution. Schools are required to count point totals for four main sports (football, volleyball, men's basketball and women's basketball) along with their next eight highest point totals from the remaining sports, regardless of gender.
For most sports, the first-place team earns 12 points, the second place team earns 11 points, etc. For rifle, men's indoor track, men's outdoor track and beach volleyball – which do not have eight participating teams – the first-place team earns 12 points and each subsequent place earns points less than the total number of teams in the OVC divided by the number of teams that sponsor that sport.
The OVC releases updated Commissioner's Cup standings at the conclusion of the fall and winter championship seasons before the final results are revealed following the spring championship season.
UT Martin's best finish in the OVC Commissioner's Cup standings came in 2011-12 when the Skyhawks placed seventh out of 11 schools. UT Martin's most points in a single academic year came in 2016-17 as the Skyhawks compiled 89 points.
