BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – For only the 12th time in Ohio Valley Conference men's basketball history, a player has been named Newcomer of the Week for the third straight week as the University of Tennessee at Martin's Parker Stewart accomplished that feat today.
Stewart is part of an exclusive list of players who have been spotlighted as the OVC's top newcomer for three consecutive weeks, joining Skyhawk representatives Craig Randall II (2018-19) and Brian Foster (2000-01). The OVC started recognizing a Newcomer of the Week during the 1985-86 season.
Hailing from Union City, Tenn., Stewart averaged 17.0 points over a pair of games last week. He shot an even 40 percent (6-of-15) from beyond the three-point arc as UT Martin split against Gardner-Webb (lost 81-64) and Boston University (won 76-73) in the Cancun Challenge.
Stewart accounted for a game-high 25 points on Tuesday against Gardner-Webb, sinking five 3-pointers while grabbing six rebounds against the eventual Mayan Division champion. The next day against Boston University, he tallied nine points – including a pair of go-ahead free throws with 55 seconds remaining – to help the Skyhawks to the victory.
The 6-5, 200-pound guard currently ranks third in the OVC in minutes played (34.7 per game), fourth in three-point field goals made (2.7 per game) and seventh in scoring (15.9 points per game).
UT Martin heads back on the road this week to take on Central Michigan. Tipoff from Mount Pleasant, Mich. is scheduled for 6 p.m. CST on Friday, Dec. 6.
