CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin football team saw its Ohio Valley Conference championship and FCS playoff hopes take a major hit with a 38-24 loss at No. 24 Austin Peay in a matchup of league leaders.
The Skyhawks (6-4, 5-2 OVC) moved a game out of the OVC lead with the loss. UT Martin has now lost in back-to-back trips to Austin Peay while dropping a game in the Sgt. York Trophy series.
UT Martin struggled offensively for much of the contest before finally eclipsing the 100-yard mark for total offense in the third quarter after being limited to just 53 yards in the first half. The Skyhawks lone points in the first half came on a 50-yard field goal by Ryan Courtright late in the second quarter.
The Skyhawks would rally in the second half with three touchdown strikes from John Bachus III to Jaylon Moore, finding completions of six, 27 and 16 yards, respectively. Bachus would finish the day completing 20-of-41 pass attempts for 286 yards and three touchdowns while Moore tallied five receptions for 87 yards and the three touchdowns. The breakout game by Moore marked the first three-touchdown performance by a Skyhawk since 2015.
Defensively, UT Martin allowed 491 yards of total offense, marking the highest total allowed since the Week 2 matchup against nationally ranked FBS program Florida. The Govs would gouge the Skyhawks with 236 rushing yards en route to five touchdowns while passing for 257 yards.
The senior linebacker pair of Sherrod Pittman and Cecil Cherry paced the team with 12 tackles each while combining for two tackles for loss. The trio of JaQuez Akins, Julian Crutchfield and Austin Pickett also tallied tackles for loss in the contest.

"Give Austin Peay credit because they got after us," UT Martin head coach Jason Simpson said. "They have a good football team and they won at the line of scrimmage. We didn't play our best and they just played better. These guys fought hard but we couldn't overcome too many mistakes."
UT Martin will return to action with its home finale and Senior Day activities against OVC rival Tennessee State on Saturday, Nov. 16. Kickoff from Graham Stadium is scheduled for 2 p.m.
