MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball squad stormed out of the gates this evening against Ohio Valley Conference foe Austin Peay but the Governors caught fire and handed the Skyhawks a heartbreaking 3-2 setback (25-20, 25-16, 22-25, 25-27, 9-15) on Senior Night.
It was an emotional night from the start as UT Martin seniors Hannah Phillips and Gintare Mackeviciute were honored in a pregame ceremony. The Skyhawk duo played well as Phillips provided 14 digs, six kills, six assists and three blocks while Mackeviciute tallied nine kills, a .240 hitting percentage and five blocks.
The Skyhawks (10-18, 6-7 OVC) received a match-high 19 kills out of Logan Wallick, who hit .326 with only five miscues in 43 swings. Kenzie Hinshaw (match-high 43 assists, seven kills, seven digs, four blocks) and Addison Conley (12 kills) also paced UT Martin's offensive attack.
Lucy Kaufman (match-best 18 digs) and Justine Walker (match-high nine blocks) ignited the Skyhawk defense in a match that tallied 31 tie scores and 14 lead changes.
UT Martin rode the hot hand of Conley in the opening set, as the sophomore from London, Ohio provided four kills out of the Skyhawks' first seven points. Wallick slammed down two kills during a 4-0 UT Martin spurt while back-to-back Conley kills extended the Skyhawk advantage out to 17-12. Another Conley kill – her seventh of the set – ignited a 7-3 run that turned a one-point UT Martin lead into a first-stanza triumph.
Wallick came through with two early kills to aid the Skyhawks to an 8-3 lead to start off the second set. Hinshaw, Wallick and Conley each earned kills during a 6-0 UT Martin surge while a dig/kill by Kaufman moments later pushed the Skyhawk advantage out to 20-11. Wallick chipped in a kill and a block assist down the stretch as UT Martin never trailed in the second set, taking a 2-0 lead in the process.
Things looked promising for the Skyhawks after back-to-back Phillips kills helped UT Martin race out to a 14-10 lead in the third set. The Governors responded with four straight points but the Skyhawks recorded consecutive points via Wallick kills to help push their lead back out to 18-15. Two more Wallick kills and another Phillips kill gave UT Martin a 22-21 advantage but Austin Peay unreeled four straight points to stave off elimination.
The Governors took that momentum into the fourth set, scoring the first five points. The Skyhawks quickly found their groove, accounting for 10 of 12 points during one stretch. Jessica Reynolds provided a spark off the bench with two straight kills before the two sides swapped 3-0 runs. UT Martin broke set point after a Hinshaw kill and a block assist from Walker and Reynolds, earning match point at 25-24. However, the Governors once again clicked late with three unanswered points to even the match at 2-all.
Wallick began the winner-take-all fifth set with a kill but Austin Peay answered with four straight kills. Karen Scanlon came away with three kills in the span of five Skyhawk points – including a big kill that pulled UT Martin within a single point midway through the set. But like the previous two sets, the Governors turned up the intensity late as they pieced together five of the final seven points.
The Skyhawks have their home finale tomorrow as UT Martin hosts Murray State. First serve from Skyhawk Fieldhouse is scheduled for 2 p.m.
