CHICAGO, Ill. – University of Tennessee at Martin redshirt-freshman quarterback John Bachus III has been added to the STATS FCS Jerry Rice Award Watch List.
The Rice Award is named for the legendary Hall of Fame wide receiver and presented since 2011 to the Division I subdivision's freshman player of the year. Bachus is one of 24 players nominated to the watch list.
A native of Pulaski, Tenn., Bachus has been impressive in his first full season in a Skyhawk uniform. Starting in all nine games, Bachus has led the team to six victories while positioning the Skyhawks into first place in the Ohio Valley Conference standings. The signal caller has completed 57.2 percent of his passes with 135 completions on 236 attempts while tallying 1,890 yards and 12 touchdowns through the air. He has also notched three rushing touchdowns on the campaign.
Bachus ranks second in the OVC in passer efficiency at 145.3 while throwing for 251.3 yards per game.
Other nominees include: Omar Brown (Northern Iowa), Tyrese Chambers (Sacred Heart), Ian Corwin (Drake), Jacob Dobbs (Holy Cross), Nick Eaton (UC Davis), Metrius Fleming (Tennessee Tech), Tra Fluellen (Houston Baptist), Ailym Ford (Chattanooga), Xavier Gibson (Stephen F. Austin), Devron Harper (Gardner-Webb), Tyler Hudson (Central Arkansas), Abdul-Fatai Ibrahim (Alabama A&M), Hendrix Johnson (Northern Arizona), Kevin Johnson (Norfolk State), Trey Lance (North Dakota State), Jalen Leary (Stetson), Will McElvain (Northern Iowa), Keegan Shoemaker (Lafayette), Jake Stebbins (Cornell), Jeff Undercuffler (UAlbany), Tristan Wheeler (Richmond), Javon Williams Jr. (Southern Illinois) and Hajj-Malik Williams (Campbell).
Still a young award, the Rice is distinguished, with three of the first four recipients to complete their college careers going on to the NFL: former Towson running back Terrance West, Eastern Washington wide receiver Cooper Kupp and Fordham running back Chase Edmonds.
A national panel of over 150 sports information and media relations directors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries will vote on the award following the regular season.
Also in the postseason, STATS will present the Walter Payton Award (FCS offensive player of the year), Buck Buchanan Award (FCS defensive player of the year), Eddie Robinson Award (FCS coach of the year) and Doris Robinson Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
