SKYHAWK TENNIS CLOSES FALL SEASON AT PRESTIGIOUS ROBERTA ALISON FALL CLASSIC

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Tennessee at Martin tennis squad squared off against some of the best teams in the nation at the Roberta Alison Fall Classic, hosted by the University of Alabama this weekend.
           
The Skyhawks were one of 18 teams to compete over the weekend, joining the likes of Alabama, Alabama State, Clemson, ETSU, Indiana, Iowa State, Kennesaw State, Lewis University, Maryland, Memphis, Mississippi State, Northwestern, Ole Miss, South Alabama, Troy, UAB and Wisconsin. All in all, a total of 91 players took part in the event, including all eight UT Martin players.
           
In doubles, Sina Albersmeier and Jule Streif represented the Skyhawks in the Nancy Pate draw, earning a 7-6 (5) win over Kennesaw State's Brenna Reilly and Sofia Pinedo. The UT Martin pair also battled against teams from ETSU (6-1) and UAB (6-2) but came up just short.
           
The UT Martin doubles team of Aziza Aubin and Mizuki Sakurai took part in the Allison Eager bracket. The duo came close to victories but were ultimately defeated by teams from Iowa State (6-3), Ole Miss (6-2) and Troy (6-2).
           
In the Natalie McElveen doubles draw, the Skyhawk duo of Jillian Niedzialowski and Natasha Sijan left it all on the court but came up short against opponents from Troy (6-3) and Kennesaw State (6-0).
           
UT Martin's Amelia Campbell and Daphne Pratt were set to make a run through the Millie Begovic bracket but were forced to retire after an injury suffered during the opening round of a 6-2 setback against Mississippi State.
           
Sakurai managed an impressive win in the Lori Smith singles draw, defeating Kennesaw State's Pinedo by a 7-5, 6-2 margin. That result came after a narrow 6-3, 7-6 (3) setback at the hands of a UAB opponent.
           
Competing in the Titia Wilmink bracket, Aubin came close to wins in all three matches but fell in tiebreaking third sets in each matchup. The freshman from Sussex, England gave it her all but was defeated 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 to UAB, 6-7 (2), 6-0, 6-4 to Ole Miss and 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5) to Memphis.
           
Niedzialowski also put up a fight in the Jean Mills draw but was unable to claim a win. She fell 6-1, 7-6 (5) to an Iowa State competitor before a tough 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 setback to a Lewis University opponent.
           
In the Mari Muller bracket, Sijan also held her own but was defeated by opposition from Kennesaw State (6-1, 6-1), Lewis University (3-6, 6-4, 7-5) and Alabama State (6-1, 6-4).
           
Albersmeier kept things close in the Heather Geros draw but came up short against formidable opposition. She fell 7-6 (6), 7-5 to Kennesaw State, 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (5) to Memphis and 6-2, 6-0 to Wisconsin.
           
Representing the Skyhawks in the Amy Mascotti bracket was Daphne Pratt, who fell 6-1, 6-0 to Clemson, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 to South Alabama and 6-1, 6-0 to Alabama.
           
Streif was embroiled in three tough matchups in the Mary Anne Macfarlane draw but could not post a win against opponents from Wisconsin (6-3, 6-1), Troy (6-1, 6-1) and Memphis (6-2, 6-0).
           
Campbell's participation in the Karin Gaiser bracket was ultimately cut short after a 6-2, 3-0 (retire) setback to her opponent from Alabama.
           
The tournament puts the finishing touches on a challenging UT Martin fall schedule that produced 23 individual singles victories and 10 wins in doubles.
           
The Skyhawks begin the 2020 spring slate with a pair of matches in Oxford, Miss. UT Martin will take on Memphis before battling host Ole Miss on Jan. 20.
