The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team will look to take its winning streak on the road with a matchup at Missouri Valley Conference foe Illinois State on Saturday, Nov. 30. Tipoff from Redbird Arena is scheduled for 2 p.m. and will be streamed exclusively on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks (2-3) are looking to pick up their first road win of the season after taking advantage of a quick homestand, picking up victories over Samford (80-75) and IUPUI (57-51 over the past week. UT Martin shot over 40 percent in both contests after averaging a 32 percent shooting clip on the road.
In the team's most recent outing against IUPUI, UT Martin jumped out to an early lead in the contest by holding a 33-17 lead at the break. The Skyhawks would struggle in the third quarter watching its advantage dissipate with IUPUI ultimately taking the lead in the fourth quarter. Down but not out, the Skyhawks rallied in the final minutes to secure the 57-51 victory.
Highlighting the Skyhawks is Preseason All-OVC honoree Chelsey Perry. Perry has exploded as of late by following a 32-point outing against Samford with a near triple-double against IUPUI with 19 points, nine rebounds and a program-record eight blocks. Her eight blocks not only tied the long-standing program single-game record but ranked third in the NCAA this season. Overall, Perry ranks 17th nationally with 2.8 blocks per game while sitting 22nd with 28 blocks this season.
UT Martin head coach Kevin McMillan tallied yet another milestone earlier this week. With his 198th career victory against IUPUI on Nov. 25, McMillan became the winningest basketball coach in UT Martin history – men's or women's – surpassing former men's basketball head coach Floyd Burdette (1952-71) with 197 career wins.
Illinois State (4-1) has won its last three contest, defeating Truman State, Illinois, Northern Illinois and North Dakota with the team's lone loss coming to Marquette this season. The Redbirds are led by the play of Tete Maggett who paces the team in points (17.4), rebounds (7.0) and assists (4.0) per game. Lexi Wallen also poses a threat, averaging 15.4 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.
Saturday's contest marks the fifth meeting between the two programs in a series which dates back to 1974. UT Martin has won three of the four matchups, including the previous meeting in which the Skyhawks posted a 79-46 road victory on Dec. 7, 2014.
