
UT MARTIN WOMEN’S HOOPS DROPS SATURDAY MATINEE AT ILLINOIS STATE 70-47

NORMAL, Ill. – The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball could not overcome its shooting struggles on Saturday afternoon, dropping its fourth consecutive road contest by a score of 70-47 at Illinois State.
The Skyhawks (2-4) saw its offensive woes on the road continue as the squad tallied its fourth straight road game shooting below 40 percent from the field. Outside of an explosive second quarter in which UT Martin shot 53.8 percent from the field, the Skyhawks managed to shoot just 27.9 percent for the other three quarters.
Junior forward Chelsey Perry led the Skyhawks with 14 points while tallying eight rebounds, three steals and three blocks in the contest. Fellow junior Tamiah Stanford rounded out the road squad in double figures with 10 points.
Illinois State (5-1) picked up its fourth straight victory by shooting 43.5 from the floor. The Redbirds would see four different players score in double figures, led by the play of Lexi Wallen with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Fellow standout TeTe Maggett nearly tallied a triple-double with 15 points, nine assists and eight rebounds in the contest. Mary Compton (12 points) and Megan Talbot (11 points) also scored in double figures for the Redbirds.
The Redbirds would strike early in the game, holding a lead as large as eight points in the opening quarter before the Skyhawks began to chip away. Cutting the margin down the three points at the end of the first quarter, the Skyhawks responded by taking its first lead of the contest a minute into the second period before ultimately stretching the team's lead out to as large as seven.
UT Martin would hold a three-point lead heading into the second half, but it was Illinois State which proved to control the final two quarters. After tying the contest early in the third quarter, the Redbirds controlled the tempo from there, outscoring the Skyhawks 37-11 in the second half to cruise to a 70-47 victory.
UT Martin will return to action with a matchup at regional rival Southern Illinois on Tuesday, Dec. 3. Tipoff from the Banterra Center is scheduled for 6 p.m.
