MARTIN, Tenn. – University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball junior forward Chelsey Perry tallied eight blocks to tie the program's single-game record as the Skyhawks posted a 57-51 victory over Mid-Major power IUPUI on Monday night.
The Skyhawks (2-3) finished the brief homestand with a perfect mark, picking up victories over both Samford and IUPUI over the last week. UT Martin jumped out to an early lead in the contest, holding a 33-17 lead at the break, but struggled in the third quarter watching its advantage dissipate with IUPUI ultimately taking the lead in the fourth quarter. Down but not out, the Skyhawks rallied in the final minutes to secure the 57-51 victory.
Highlighting the contest was the play of Perry who followed up a 32-point performance in her last contest with 19 points, nine rebounds and eight blocks against IUPUI. The eight blocks tied the program's single-game record with Mary Kate Long (1986) and Rickiesha Bryant (2013) while ranking as the third-most blocks in a contest this season in the NCAA.
Joining Perry in double figures was guard Tamiah Stanford who notched 12 points while Brittni Moore and Demi Burdick posted solid outings. Moore chipped in eight points and eight rebounds while Burdick tallied season highs with six points and five rebounds.
"This is an unbelievable win for us at this point when you consider where we are," UT Martin head coach Kevin McMillan said. "Being down yet another starter, we aren't looking for excuses, but it's a challenge. We jumped out early and had a chance in the third quarter to put the game away but we just weren't able to. Late in the game we needed someone to step up and give credit to Tamiah and Chelsey for making big shots at the end."
IUPUI (2-3) dropped its third consecutive contest. After watching fourth quarter leads vanish in the past two games, the Jags looked to spoil the party but once again dropped a single-digit decision on the road. Natalie Anderson paced the Jags with 16 points off the bench while Macee Williams tallied 15 point and seven rebounds to wrap up the team's double-digit scorers.
UT Martin will look to take its gritty play on the road with a contest at Illinois State on Saturday, Nov. 30. Tipoff from Redbird Arena is scheduled for 2 p.m.
