BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Parker Stewart, a guard at the University of Tennessee at Martin, was crowned as the Ohio Valley Conference Men's Basketball Newcomer of the Week this afternoon.
Stewart nabs his first career OVC accolade after he transferred to the Skyhawks from the University of Pittsburgh. UT Martin has now tallied seven OVC Newcomer of the Week awards since the start of the 2018-19 season, which are three more than any other school in the league in that span.
The 6-5, 200-pound combo guard led the Skyhawks in scoring (20.5 points per game), rebounding (6.5 per game) and assists (3.5 per game) this past week as UT Martin split a pair of road matchups.
Last Wednesday in the 98-91 victory at Western Illinois, Stewart posted career-highs of 32 points and 11 rebounds for his first collegiate double-double. With the Skyhawks trailing by 15 points in the second half, he unleashed 12 consecutive points in a span of 2:06 to get UT Martin back in the game. He also buried a contested three-pointer to extend the Skyhawk lead to five points with 45 seconds to go, essentially icing the win. He became the first UT Martin player to score at least 30 points as part of a double-double against a Division I opponent since 2013.
Stewart wrapped up his week with nine points, a team-high five assists, two rebounds and a steal at Wichita State on Saturday.
The Union City, Tenn. native currently ranks fourth in the OVC in minutes played (32.5 per game) and seventh in three-point field goals made (2.3 per game). Stewart leads the Skyhawks in assists (3.3 per game) while tossing in 13.8 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.5 steals per contest.
UT Martin returns to the court tomorrow when it takes on Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa at 7 p.m.
