MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin football team will hold its annual Homecoming festivities with a matchup against nationally ranked No. 18 Ohio Valley Conference foe Jacksonville State on Saturday, Nov. 2. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN+.
Saturday's contest will serve as the program's 67th annual Homecoming game with UT Martin holding a 36-30 overall mark in said matchups. This will mark just sixth time the Skyhawks and Gamecocks have squared off on Homecoming with the previous meetings coming in 1980, 1984, 1986, 2004 and 2013. The Skyhawks are 8-5 in Homecoming games under the direction of head coach Jason Simpson.
The Skyhawks (5-3, 4-1 OVC) saw the team's four-game winning streak come to a halt last week against No. 24 Southeast Missouri. UT Martin would tally a season-high five turnovers in the contest while missing a pair of field goal attempts to squander the road matchup. Despite the loss, the Skyhawks remain in first place in the OVC standings while being tied in the loss column with Austin Peay, Eastern Kentucky and Southeast Missouri.
UT Martin currently ranks first in OVC play in scoring defense (16.8 ppg), total defense (311.2 ypg) and rushing defense (71.8 ypg) while leading the way with seven interceptions and 20 sacks. Additionally, the Skyhawks rank second in total offense (412.8 ypg), pass efficiency (149.0) and pass defense efficiency (110.4) while sitting third in scoring offense (34.0 ppg).
Saturday's matchup features two of the league's winningest head coaches in UT Martin Jason Simpson and Jacksonville State's John Grass. Simpson ranks sixth in OVC history with 85 career victories while his next victory will move him into sole possession of the program's all-time mark. Meanwhile, Grass has excelled in his six seasons leading the Gamecocks posting a 58-16 mark.
Jacksonville State (6-3, 3-2 OVC) has reigned supreme over OVC opponents over the past six seasons going 41-3 while winning five consecutive league titles during the stretch. The Gamecocks recently posted a 14-12 victory over Murray State last week behind the play of backup quarterback Zion Webb who directed a pair of scoring drives in the first half. JSU is ranked 18th in the AFCA Coaches Poll and 22nd in the STATS FCS Poll.
This marks the 41st meeting between the two programs in a series that dates back to 1967. Jacksonville State holds a commanding lead in the series by a tally of 33-7 while winning six straight matchups. UT Martin last defeated JSU at home on Nov. 3, 2012 in a wild 49-47 contest which featured over 1,100 yards of combined total offense and zero turnovers.
The game will be streamed live on ESPN+. Fans can also tune into WCMT 1410 AM/100.5 FM to hear Tom Britt (play-by-play), Chris Brinkley (color), John Hatler (color) and John Abel (sideline) provide analysis. WUTM, UT Martin's award-winning student radio station, will also broadcast the game on 90.3 FM.
