BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Danelle Fabianich, University of Tennessee at Martin's assistant athletics director for academics and student-athlete services, has been named as one of two recipients of the 2019 Ohio Valley Conference Thurston Banks Award for Distinguished Academic Service.
Fabianich and fellow recipient Dr. Lance Jasitt of Tennessee Tech will be presented their awards at the 2019 OVC Honor Brunch as part of the OVC Spring Meetings in May. Fabianich is just the second UT Martin recipient of the award, following Dr. Nell Gullett in 2016.
The award, selected by the OVC Faculty Athletics Representatives (FAR's), was established in 2013 to recognize individuals (e.g. academic advisor, professor, tutor, etc.) with at least five years of service at one or more OVC member institutions, for their outstanding contributions to OVC student-athletes' academic success, learning and development as well for their overall commitment to the institution's athletics program.
The award is named after Dr. Thurston Banks, who served the Tennessee Tech department of athletics for 31 of his 34 years on the faculty and served as the FAR for 25 years before stepping down in 2006. He was inducted into the OVC Hall of Fame in 2007.
Fabianich has been an integral part of the UT Martin department of athletics for 24 years and currently serves as the Skyhawks' Senior Woman Administrator in addition to her assistant AD duties. She serves as the liaison between the athletic department and the academic faculty and the Student Success Center. Her primary responsibilities include monitoring academic progress and coordinating academic assistance for all student-athletes. She also supervises departmental tutors along with student-athlete services to include life skills and coordinating community service efforts.
As the Senior Woman Administrator, a role Fabianich has held since 2005, she monitors gender equity issues and monitors the needs and interests of all student-athletes in her role as advisor of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). She began her career at UT Martin as a senior secretary before moving into the role of business manager.
An Eagle, Colorado native, Fabianich earned her degree at Northern Colorado at 1987 and completed her MBA at UT Martin in 1997. She is the proud mother of two children, Ashleigh and Dominic.
