UT MARTIN WOMEN’S HOOPS OPENS HOMESTAND AGAINST EASTERN ILLINOIS ON THURSDAY
1/22/2019 2:58:00 PM | Women's Basketball
The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team will return home to the friendly confines of the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center for a pair of contests this week, beginning with an Ohio Valley Conference rematch from earlier this season against Eastern Illinois on Thursday, Jan. 24. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks (12-5, 4-2 OVC) recently saw their four-game winning streak come to an abrupt halt on the road against league foe Morehead State. UT Martin would jump out to a 12-point lead in the first half before a second half comeback attempt by the host Eagles proved to be too much to overcome before ultimately falling 85-75.
UT Martin will look to get back to its winning ways with the team's significant home court advantage. Under head coach Kevin McMillan, the Skyhawks have posted a 97-23 record in the Elam Center over the past 10 seasons – including a 68-10 mark against OVC foes. During league play UT Martin has seen the trio of Emanye Robertson (14.2 points), Chelsey Perry (13.3 points) and Brittni Moore (10.4 points) each average in double figures.
Eastern Illinois (8-9, 2-4 OVC) enters the contest hoping to notch a series sweep against the Skyhawks for the first time since the 2009-10 season. The Panthers have already equaled their OVC win total from a season ago under second year head coach Matt Bollant. In the team's previous matchup, senior guard Grace Lennox posted a strong outing to pace five Panthers in double figures with 26 points and five assists. On the season, Karle Pace (14.8 ppg) and Taylor Steele (11.2 ppg) rank as the team's top scorers.
Thursday's contest marks the 53rd meeting between the two programs with UT Martin holding a 33-19 series advantage. Eastern Illinois won the previous matchup this season by a score of 77-71 back on Jan. 3 in Charleston, Ill. Despite the loss, the Skyhawks have won 12 of the last 14 meetings against the Panthers dating back to the 2012-13 season.
The game will be televised live on ESPN+. Fans can also tune into WCMT 1410 AM, 100.5 FM, 92.7 FM, 96.1 FM, 99.7 FM and 103.3 FM to hear Chris Brinkley (play-by-play) and Eddie Suiter (color) provide analysis. WUTM, UT Martin's award-winning student radio station, will also broadcast the game on 90.3 FM.
