MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team turned to its youth for clutch performances on Thursday night and came away delighted as the host Skyhawks avenged an early-season Ohio Valley Conference loss to Eastern Illinois by a score of 90-66.
The Skyhawks (13-5, 5-2 OVC) notched their ninth win in the friendly confines of the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center of the season with impressive closing quarters of both halves. After watching the game go back-and-forth for much of the first, the Skyhawks posted a dominant 30-10 second quarter while holding Eastern Illinois to just seven points in the fourth quarter to clinch the team's fifth victory in league play.
Highlighting the night was the play of freshman Brittni Moore who capitalized on her first career start for the Skyhawks by scoring a career-high 22 points to lead all scorers along with four rebounds on the night. Moore became just the fourth individual player to eclipse 20-point in a contest this season while besting her previous career-high by seven points. Senior Emanye Robertson and sophomore Chelsey Perry also scored in double figures, notching 17 and 15 points, respectively. Additionally, while the offensive statistics weren't glaring, freshman guard Kyannah Grant played 20 minutes in the contest and posted a +24 in her action to push the squad from the guard position.
"I thought it was a strange game," UT Martin head coach Kevin McMillan." In the first and third quarters we get outscored by seven, but in the second and fourth quarters, we outscored them by 31. It just doesn't make a lot of sense. I thought our freshmen had a very big game for us and that speaks very well for us in the future. I just hope that we keep learning, growing and getting better. Brittni can do a lot of things, make shots, defend and rebound but I think Kyannah was off the charts good for us. Our freshman class as a whole had a pretty good ballgame tonight."
Eastern Illinois (8-10, 2-5 OVC) saw three different players score in double figures behind a team-high 14 points from Carmen Tellez. Abby Wahl and Taylor Steele also scored in double digits with 21 combined points.
UT Martin will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 26 when playing host to OVC rival SIUE. Tipoff from the Elam Center is scheduled for 1 p.m.
