MARTIN, Tenn. – After more than two full months away from official competition, the 2018-19 University of Tennessee at Martin equestrian season resumes this Thursday, Jan. 24 when the Skyhawks play host to No. 6 Georgia. The competition will take place at the Ned McWherter Agricultural Complex and will begin at 10 a.m.
Thursday will mark the fifth time that UT Martin squares off against a nationally ranked squad this season. The Skyhawks are officially back in action for the first time since a narrow 11-8 home loss to then-No. 5 South Carolina on Nov. 2.
UT Martin is coming off a productive fall season that saw four different riders pick up individual awards by either the National Collegiate Equestrian Association or the United Equestrian Conference. Noel Meadows earned NCEA Reining Rider of the Month honors in September while also capturing UEC Reining Rider of the Week accolades on Sept. 26. Monika Zoromski was also tabbed UEC Equitation over Fences Rider of the Month for October while Kelby Kane (equitation on the flat and equitation over fences) and Tess Baumann (horsemanship and reining) each collected a pair of UEC Rider of the Week mentions on Nov. 5.
Overall, the Skyhawks generated 44 head-to-head victories and 14 MOP honors spread out over seven fall competitions. UT Martin found its most success in reining (five different Skyhawks combining for 13 total wins) while five of the team's MOP winners accomplished that feat in equitation on the flat. A grand total of 16 different UT Martin student-athletes (nine in the Western discipline, seven in the Hunter Seat discipline) scored victories in the fall.
Georgia wrapped up the fall season ranked No. 6 nationally after a 2-3 record. Last season, the Bulldogs were the NCEA Reserve national champions while also bringing home the NCEA event national title in equitation on the flat. Reining NCEA Equitation over Fences Rider of the Year Maddy Darst paces the Hunter Seat returnees while two-time All-American Graysen Stroud leads the Western lineup for Georgia.
