MOREHEAD, Ky. – The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team led by as much as 12 points in the first quarter before ultimately dropping a hard-fought road contest at Ohio Valley Conference rival Morehead State by a final score of 85-75 on Saturday afternoon.
The Skyhawks (12-5, 4-2 OVC) saw their four-game losings streak come to an end in a contest which saw three players foul out for the road team and a total of 53 fouls called in the contest. After a fast start to the game for the Skyhawks, an abundance of whistles turned the contest into a choppy and at times sloppy contest.
Despite holding a lead as large as 12 points early in the game, Morehead State continued to chip away, trimming the deficit to just two points before halftime. With the game in reach, the Eagles outscored the Skyhawks by seven in the third to take a lead in which it would not relinquish down the stretch.
UT Martin was led in scoring by Aundrea Adams who attacked the rim throughout the night, drawing numerous fouls. Adams would pace the team with 16 points while making 12-of-17 free throw attempts. Sophomore Zaire Hicks ranked as the only starter in double figures, tallying 15 points and six rebounds while freshman Brittni Moore chipped in 12 points off the bench with a quartet of three-pointers.
"Today was disappointing in the fact that our teams have to play as five players and only four positions showed up," UT Martin head coach Kevin McMillan said. "Our kids battled and several players showed a ton of fight but our point guards simply didn't show up to play which makes it really hard to win a game. We made the plays to take a lead early but gave it away. We even fought back but could not get the shots to fall, bodies on loose balls or the turnovers we needed to pull out a big road victory. There were things in this game to build on, but still a lot of things left to fix."
Morehead State (13-6, 4-2 OVC) tied the Skyhawks in the league standings while four different players scored in double figures. Mckenzie Calvert led all scorers with 22 points while Tierra McGowan posted an impressive double-double with 18 points and 17 rebounds. Miranda Crockett and Aliyah Jeune would also join in the action with 15 points each.
UT Martin will look to return to its winning ways with a matchup against OVC foe Eastern Illinois. Tipoff of the early OVC rematch is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 24 at 5:30 p.m.
