MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team was able to outlast the Western Carolina Catamounts this evening as the Skyhawks claimed a 2-1 victory.
UT Martin (4-2) was led by the duo of Skylor Keane and Bella Roberts and they both found the back of the net in the exciting match. Samantha Kelly and Danae Kaldaridou were responsible for assists as both issued nifty passes. Keane and Roberts also paced the club in shots while Keane's three on goal led the team in the category. Also tallying shots on the evening were Kelly, Kaldaridou, Sara Ketis, Kaci Mitchell, Amy McGivern, Nicole Collins and Blare Gerido.
Erica Myers stood tall between the posts as the Holland, Ohio native allowed just one goal but saved a pair of would-be scores in her complete match.
Along with Myers, the back line tandem of Kamryn Chappell and Jacalyn Schubring logged the full 90 minutes on the pitch.
With another match to play in less than 24 hours, a host of Skyhawks saw playing time tonight. "We put some pressure on ourselves tonight with some players playing too many minutes but I feel that the players will dig deep and put together another outstanding performance tomorrow," head coach Phil McNamara said. "I felt that we had some players come off the bench and give us an injection of energy that allowed us to play more at our pace."
It would take nearly 65 minutes for the first goal of the bout to find the back of the net when Keane took a quick pass from Kaldaridou to reel off a shot and put the Skyhawks up 1-0. Western Carolina answered just a little over two minutes later with a goal of its own. Roberts sent the game-winner between the posts at the 80:12 mark as she received a hot pass from Kelly for a one-touch goal.
UT Martin returns to action tomorrow as it hosts regional opponent Union. First touch is slated for 7 p.m.
