SKYHAWK VOLLEYBALL TRAVELS TO THE PEACH STATE FOR MERCER BEARS CLASSIC

MARTIN, Tenn. – Off to its best start in the Jaclynn Yocum Era, the University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball program looks to continue its momentum this weekend when it heads to the Mercer Bears Classic in Macon, Ga.

The Skyhawks will take on Jacksonville (12 p.m.) and Mercer (5 p.m.) on Friday, Sept. 7 before rounding out the tournament against Alabama A&M at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8. UT Martin has never faced Jacksonville and has not played Mercer since 2010. The Skyhawks hold a 5-2 all-time advantage over Alabama A&M, winning three straight in the series.

UT Martin (4-3) is coming off a very successful week where it won three out of four matches in the Skyhawk Invitational. Brooke Gyori (92 digs, 4.84 per set) and Kenzie Hinshaw (four double-doubles, 8.74 assists per set) each claimed all-tournament status while Megan Fair (team-best 2.67 kills per set) and Justine Walker (team-high 1.05 blocks per set) also heavily contributed as UT Martin knocked off defending Southland Conference champion Central Arkansas, Memphis and Florida A&M.

On the season, Gyori's 5.03 digs per set average ranks second in the Ohio Valley Conference while Hinshaw's 8.74 assists per set rank eighth. Junior middle blocker Gintare Mackeviciute (2.32 kills per set, 0.71 blocks per set) leads the Skyhawks with 89 points (2.87 per set).

After posting 18 wins and finishing second in the Atlantic Sun Conference in 2017, Jacksonville comes into the weekend with an 0-5 overall record under first-year head coach Evan Muys. Mallory Mattingly's 3.10 kills per set and Lauren Petersen's 7.95 assists per set guide the Dolphin offense while Natalie Wehner and Hannah Marchand pace the defense with 2.70 digs and 0.60 blocks per set, respectively.

Mercer has tallied a 3-4 record so far in 2018, opening its season at tournaments hosted by OVC schools Jacksonville State and Morehead State. Second-year head coach Derek Schroeder oversees an offense that is directed by Paige Alsten (team-highs of 3.24 kills per set and a .259 attack percentage) while the Bear defense is led by Emilee Wissmach (3.88 digs per set) and Alexia Morey (0.92 blocks per set).

Alabama A&M enters the tournament at 3-5 overall after finishing in second place in the Southwestern Athletic Conference last fall. Jaelin Gant spikes down a team-best 2.48 kills per set while Megan Evans divvies out a team-high 6.79 assists per set for the Lady Bulldogs. Defensively, fifth-year head coach Rose Powell relies on Maci Battle (3.32 digs per set) and Alana Cox (0.86 blocks per set).
